What is twerking? According to the urban dictionary it is dancing to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance. Twerking has been around for a very long time.
‘Back that Thang Up’ by the Hot Boys came out how many years ago and they were certainly twerking in that video. Why are people suddenly going so crazy about the dance move? Maybe it’s because mainstream artist like Miley Cyrus twerk in the middle of award shows.
There seems to be a new craze with the dance that seemingly occurred over night. No matter how you may feel about the sexually suggestive dance it is certainly not new in the African-American community. There has been a lot of back lash behind the dance and it is certainly not one I would like to catch my child doing, but when the dance is performed in an appropriate setting by adults, what’s the problem?
It wasn’t a big deal when the movie “Dirty Dancing” came out. A lot of trends start in the African-American community, but when it goes main stream and pours into upper class neighborhoods, then it becomes “newsworthy.”
Nevertheless, all good things must come to an end and I am wondering if twerking needs to die.
I have found some very interesting videos to share with you. Some of them are funny and some of them make you cover your eyes and then look again without meaning to.
No matter how you feel about the dance craze, I doubt that it will go anywhere anytime soon. It may just be one of those things that you have to shake your head at and keep going.
