Hip-Hop in Pink: Hip-Hop Artists Affected by Breast Cancer

As we begin a new month and start preparing for the fall, Halloween and all the other fun holidays to come,  we tend to get caught up and forget the other factors that come with October. Breast Cancer Awareness takes place in the month of October. For those that haven’t been affected by it, it flies under the radar for them but it is still a very important topic and one that affects more people than we expect.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, we want to celebrate those in hip-hop that have been affected by breast cancer and fought hard against it! We hope this encourages others to raise awareness and stay up to date when it comes to breast cancer.

Nas – Nas’ mother, Ann Jones, passed away from breast cancer in 2002. Nas made this statement when his mother passed, “I never saw nobody with spirit so up. Her spirit was bigger than that cancer, man.”

Notorious B.I.G. – B.I.G.’s mother, Voletta Wallace, not only survived breast cancer once but TWICE! Miss Wallace told HipHopDX that she wanted to help others: “If I could reach one person, one woman who could walk into a room and examine herself, detect that lump, seek help and get rid of that cancer, I think I would have accomplished a lot.”

Chance the Rapper – Chance’s aunt, Kimberly Bennett, passed away back in May of this year from inflammatory breast cancer. When she passed away, Chance wrote: “She was a warrior.”

Roxanne Shante – Back in 2009, Roxanne Shante revealed she was battling with breast cancer after finding a lump in her left breast. She encourages women to go get checked after her own experience.

Lil Mama – Lil Mama lost her mother to breast cancer in 2007 and ever since then she has been raising awareness on the serious matter
