ESSENCE honored Missy with the Visionary Award during the annual pre-Grammy event, which celebrates Black women’s extraordinary contributions to music. The crowd was in for a surprise when Janet Jackson appeared on stage to honor Missy on all her accomplishments in her career.

In Missy’s acceptance speech she had this to say: “I wouldn’t wanna be any other color but black. I’m black and I’m proud. There’s something about our DNA that can’t be taught. It comes from a different place.
