Good Hair over Good Health

The issue of exercise is very important for the African American community. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, four out of five African American women are overweight or obese which is the highest rate in the country.

The costly and timely upkeep of hairstyles may be preventing many African American women from working out. Many women feel forced to choose between working out and having great hair. Some of the challenges are faced with hair after a work out are hair feels dry, looks frizzy, lack luster, and loss of style retention. A good cardio workout will result in our bodies overheating and sweating. Sweat will destroy most hairstyles. Working out for all women is such an issue, actress Nicole Ari Parker created the Save Your Do™ head wrap.

Save Your Do™ GymWrap is a stylish headband developed with a patent-pending revolutionary “Edge Control Technology” that minimizes sweat absorption through a unique blend of materials that allows heat to escape while letting cool air in. The moisture ‘wicking’ process occurs at the molecular level within the fabric resulting in drier flat hair!

The idea for the Save Your Do™ GymWrap came to me last year when I noticed a common excuse emerge among busy everyday women (myself included) about why they couldn’t work out: their hair. Hair is a serious issue for most of us women because after spending a ton of time and money to have it washed, blow dried, flat-ironed and curled, none of us want to sweat and mess it up all over again.

I could not have predicted what happened next…during that summer, the Surgeon General issued a statement saying ‘Women have got to stop using their hair as an excuse not to exercise.’ Wow, there it was plain as day. Our health issues had reached a state of emergency all because of one little detail, our hair. This nationwide call to action inspired me even more to perfect the GymWrap and finally bring it to you.

The Save Your Do™ GymWrap comes in a variety of colors and is available in three styles: Full triangle, wide band and narrow band. The Save Your Do™ GymWrap is ideal for all hair lengths, types and textures

I have also struggled with what to do with my hair after a workout. The sweat in my hair from working out  requires washing or rinsing after each workout. My current workout regiment is 5 to 6 times a week. That’s a lot of stress and damage to put on your hair. I avoid heat while embracing my “gym hair”. For me not working out isn’t an option. My health has improved along with my over all well being. So, if you are struggling with hair or working give Save Your Do™ GymWrap a try. I am considering purchasing it as well.  Also ask your stylist for  pointers on styles the can stand up to intense cardio workouts but get moving or keep moving. Stay tuned for more health articles and please share any experiences or pointers.
