RnB Magazine Chats With R&B/Bluegrass-Soul Duo, The Amours, As They Talk New Music, Opening Up For Jazmine Sullivan, Working As Sisters, Performing In Front Of First Lady Michelle Obama, & More

The Amours are an RnB duo comprised of two soulful sisters Jakiya Ayanna and Shaina Aisha. This dynamic duo have already opened up for Jazmine Sullivan on her “Reality Show” tour and have performed in front of our first lady Michelle Obama at Children’s National Hospital. What’s next for these soul sisters? Read below.

-Was music each of you ladies passion growing up?

Jakiya: No, it wasn’t until the age of 12 when I realized that I had a passion for music after attending a Musical Theater camp. I wanted to be a basketball player! Lol

Shaina : I had more of an interest in dancing and fashion and on the side of that, I love science. Lol.. I was in musical theatre camps at a young age, so I wanted to dance and I’ve always had a love for clothes! Back then I wanted to design but as time went by I’m more into styling now on the side of music.

-Tell me about your childhood. How was it singing in your church’s choir? Did you envision yourself being where you are today?

Jakiya: Singing in church was a privilege and an honor. That was our chance to show God that we were using the gift that he blessed us with.

Shaina: We never thought that we would be doing it professionally.

-What does your family think about your singing career?

Jakiya: Well, when you come from a family full of educators, music being a career choice isn’t really considered ” a real job ” to them, but when you have a Mom that is interested in what your goals and dreams are and not up for keeping up with tradition or following in the footsteps of other family members I could careless about what others think! Our mom is invested into our career and she pushes us to go for everything we put our minds to! Her only rule is that we give our all and never give up on passion!

Shaina: Ditto! lol

Who were some of your musical influences?

Shaina: James Brown, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Braxtons

-You ladies are sisters. How is it working together and touring together?

Jakiya: We’re sisters and we act as such lol. It’s great being able to work with your sister. Your sister is really your first best friend!

Shaina: It really helps that we stay in our lane. We both bring different elements to the group and with us sticking to our strengths, things run pretty smooth.

-How was it opening up for Jazmine Sullivan’s “The Reality Show” tour?

Shaina: Lots of fun!! I happened to be in school when my mom and sister called me and said they wanted to know if we could open up. My jaw dropped lol

Jakiya: We got a call from her a few hours before her last show on the tour in our hometown DC. We rushed over to the venue. We were extremely excited and grateful that she reached out to us! It was a phenomenal experience.

-What is it like being the proteges of Jasmine Sullivan? What’s the best advice she has ever given you?

Jakiya: Jazmine is a friend, she’s very sweet and supportive.

Shaina: Advice from her.. Not to drink lol

-Shaina- How is it being so young and having your music heard across the world? How do you manage your time?

Shaina: Well I’m pretty mature for my age and I’m hungry for my craft so it’s feel good so far but I just want to take the music to the next level.

-How was it performing in front of first lady Michelle Obama at Children’s National Hospital?

Jakiya: That was a wonderful experience! We are honored that we were chosen to be apart! First Lady Obama is beautiful and has a sweet spirit!

-What would you tell a young girl wanted to follow her dreams as a singer?

Jakiya: Go after any and everything you put your mind to. Don’t waste time caring about what people think of you! You won’t know what you’re capable of until you try!

Shaina: Don’t look back and have fun!! If you don’t LOVE what you’re doing, it’s not the Right path for you.

-What’s next for The Amours?

Shaina: We’re releasing a Visual soon for our single ” Smile ”

Jakiya: We’re soon dropping a cover as well and it’s safe to say that we’ll be releasing an Album early next year!
