New York-bred singer/songwriter Aisha Badru is set to release her full-length debut, Pendulum, April 27th. Pre-order it here.

Who are some of your musical influences that inspired your soulful sound?

I can’t really say that there is anyone in particular who inspired my sound. I grew up listening to a wide range of genres from soul music, to pop, to alternative rock. I definitely think I’ve taken elements from all of these places and crafted a sound of my own. I’ve been inspired the most by folk music.

To my understanding, you are a big yoga fan. Do you tie your love for yoga into your music? Have you ever got a song idea while practicing yoga?

I’ve never gotten a song idea while practicing yoga, but my yoga practice is definitely connected to my spiritual journey, and my spiritual journey has definitely influenced the lyrical content of some of my songs that you’ll hear on the album.

You performed at SXSW. How was that?

SXSW was such a fulfilling experience. It was one of the best performances of my life. I really felt like I peeled off all my layers and exposed myself completely to the audience.

Tell me about your anticipated album Pendulum. What’s the concept behind that title? And your favorite track off the album? And why?

‘Pendulum’ represents the polarity of life. You can’t have hot without cold, good without bad, or light without the dark. “Splintered” is my favorite song from the album because it encourages people to face the dark spots within us in order to find the light.

How does this differ from your debut EP, Vacancy?

‘Vacancy’ was about feeling empty, whereas ‘Pendulum’ is the realization that those empty moments are what allow us to truly appreciate the moments of being full. ‘Vacancy’ is also different from ‘Pendulum’ because it is was stripped, with just myself and the guitar. For the most part, Pendulum is fully produced.

Any collaborations we can look out for?

Chris Hutchison, someone I met online from the UK, produced the album. We actually still have yet to meet in person! His production added a unique perspective to my songs that really allowed me to be more dynamic. We explored electronic and atmospheric elements and this really helped me to step out of the box of just singing along to my guitar.

What are some of your hobbies? I know yoga is one of them, but what else do you enjoy doing?

I love exploring. For the first time in my life I’ve been given the opportunity to travel. Within the past two years I’ve been to India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Egypt and Peru. It’s been such life-changing experience to be able to interact with people all over the world and to see things for what they really are.

Are there any touring plans in the near future?

I have no concrete plans, but I’m looking really forward to touring Europe.
