Empire Stars Kill The Stage at This Year’s Bet Awards

The “Black-ish” stars may have been hosting the 2015 BET Awards, but it was the cast of “Empire” who nearly stole the show. Watch below!

Jussie Smollett (Jamal) Yazz The Greatest, also known as Bryshere Y. Gray (Hakeem), and Serayah (Tiana) all took the stage for a joint performance of some of the hit FOX series’ most popular songs. Smollett and Yazz teamed up for “No Apologies” and “You’re So Beautiful,” while Serayah joined Yazz for “Drip Drop.” The segment actually kicked off with BET Awards hosts Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross impersonating Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) and Lucious (Terrence Howard), before Howard, who earlier in the live broadcast won Best Actor, came out to introduce his co-stars.

Smollett, who is openly gay, used “You’re So Beautiful” to pay celebrate the Supreme Court lifting the ban on same-sex marriages, and as well as to pay tribute to the brothers and sisters whose lost lives prove that much progress in our society is still needed. “No one is free until we’re all free,” he said. The appearance followed Smollett and Yazz previously performing at the Billboard Music Awards and on “Good Morning America” in May. And back in March, they performed on “American Idol.” The the viral success of the songs helped Empire: Original Soundtrack from Season 1 debut at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

“Empire” was renewed for a second season before its first was even close to finished. The breakout show scored the highest broadcast television ratings for a new series since “Grey’s Anatomy.” And there’s a fairly good chance “Empire” will score some Emmy nods when the nominations are announced next month.

The cast all returned to Chicago last week to resume filming. Season 2 will premiere on September 23. Check out the BET Awards videos below!
