Billboard caught up with Maxwell in New Orleans at the Essence Music Festival to see where progress stands on his trilogy of albums; the first was 2009’s BLACKsummers’night, the second installment to most likely be called blackSUMMERS’night (or Summers). In the interview, the smooth crooner revealed that Summers could be looking at a late summer/early fall release.
“The album’s pretty much about the last day of summer, so I felt like it was a good idea to release it at the end of the summer,” Maxwell told Billboard. “It has that bittersweet feel to it. I don’t like things to be too happy. It’s when you go back to school, summer’s over then you kind of have that wonderful week where you get crazy. That’s what the essence of the record is.”
Did you like his collab with his soul sister Alicia Keys on their slow-burner “Fire We Make?” If so, you’re in luck, because also on his agenda are plans to make more musical magic with Keys with an EP of duets. “We’re definitely working on an EP that’s sort of Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrrell. We got a thing musically. That’s like my little sister,” he said.
