The Women Behind Aaliyah’s Dance Moves (Fatima Robinson)

On the 16th anniversary of her passing Aaliyah’s presence in music is still being felt. Aside from being a superstar the young singer/actress/songwriter was known for her unique style and down-to-earth attitude. Her One in a Million album debuted at the top of the Billboard charts and each video that followed made us want to dance and to the choreography. We can attribute much of this to Aaliyah’s choreographer Fatima Robinson. Fatima, the Hip Hop dancing diva worked on the video’s for Rock The Boat, Hot Like Fire, Try Again, We Need A Resolution, Are You That Somebody, and More Than a Woman.

Robinson was born in Little Rock Arkansas and moved to California when she was five. She started school early and graduated when she was only 16. The shift to dancing was gradual since she loved Hip Hop and was always out at a club. Being on the scene paid off for Robinson, because it was here that she met dancers and made connections. She got her first big break working with Michael Jackson at the age of 20 on the Remember the Time video.

AFter working with MJ her career took off. Robinson has worked with some the biggest names in music like Mary J Blige, The Black Eyed Peas, Fergie, and Gwen Stefani.

Putting on her director’s hat Robinson has also ventured into the movie realm setting dance scenes for The Wiz, The Wiz Live, Dream Girls, and Save the Last Dance.

While she is not taking off her dancing shoes just yet Fatima is looking to put her studies in videography to work as a full time director. She is definitely someone to keep an eye on.
