Sunday Night Wine Down

Sunday nights are turning into the best night ever for television watching. Between Power, Game of Thrones and Insecure there’s absolutely no reason to leave the house. If you are watching and live tweeting or Facebooking with friends, why not enjoy this new era of “Must See TV” with a big ole glass of your favorite wine? Here’s our list of the best wines to binge while binge watching.

Survivors Remorse

Starz Sunday at 10pm

Best Paired with Pinot Grigio

One of the lightest and most refreshing white wines, pinot grigio is a great choice for summer TV watching. A dry white wine with punchy flavors of lemons, green apples and honeysuckle it’s a great wine to enjoy while having a light dinner. A light white wine pairs well with the hilarious hijinks of the Calloway clan from Survivors Remorse. Keep up with Cam, Reggie, Cassie and M-Chuck with a big glass of pinot. This wine should be served cold in long stemmed glasses. Make sure you choose a good brand like Tesora della Regina which costs about $15.

Power

Starz Sunday at 9pm

Best Paired with Cabernet Sauvignon

A rich, full-bodied red wine with a medium level of acidity, cabernet sauvignon is great for drinking with food especially a thick, rare steak. Cabernet Sauvignon or simply, “Cab” is known for its rich, dark red color that is a perfect match for all the bloodshed and treachery that takes place on Power. Cab usually has a slight green pepper taste that also has hints of tobacco and dark fruits, like cherries. It is a dry wine and not one that will be favored by less experienced drinkers. Only true bosses will be able to appreciate a good cab like Caymus Cabernet which costs about $65 a bottle.

Game of Thrones

HBO Sundays at 9pm

Best Paired with Merlot

The game of thrones is a bloody, vicious game. The show, which is in its seventh season, is a fan favorite. There are dozens of characters to keep up with, fan sites, and a bunch of fun memes to keep you busy on a Sunday night while watching. Game of Thrones is best paired with a cheap red wine like Merlot because you will want to have plenty of it on hand if you are going to keep up with Cersei Lannister. Merlot is one of the most popular red wines in America and is easy to drink without food, unlike its big brother, Cabernet. Most merlot have a heavily grape flavor and sometimes even a hint of chocolate. Merlot comes in boxes and even gallon jugs making it a great wine to serve to friends who come over to watch. Meridian merlot is only about $7 a pop and is yummy with hints of plum and spice.

Ballers

HBO Sundays at 10pm

Best paired with Prosecco

Ballers is all about money and decadence, so you have to enjoy a sparkling wine with this show. A comedy/drama that is currently in its third season, Spencer Strasmore is the agent that we all love. The show is fast-paced and energetic which is beautifully complemented with prosecco. Many don’t know that the main difference between champagne and prosecco is that one is from France and the other is from Italy. Prosecco usually has more of a fruity flavor and pairs well with light foods like Asian flavors. Because prosecco has a cheaper price point, it is a fun wine to buy to feel like a baller, even if you aren’t one. La Marca is a very popular prosecco and usually costs only about $15.

Insecure

HBO Sundays at 10:30pm

Best paired with Chardonnay

Keeping up with Issa, Molly, and the Lawrence Hive is becoming super popular on social media. The show about a group of young, attractive African-American men and women making their way through life in L.A. while navigating their love and professional lives is a hit. Enjoying Insecure is made even easier with a cold glass of chardonnay in hand. Chardonnay is the most popular white wine in the world. Created in France, it can feature a variety of undernotes. Made with white grapes, there might also be a hint of mushrooms or vanilla. Chardonnay is usually aged in oak and will definitely feature those notes as well. Chardonnay pairs well with cheese, but it can very much be enjoyed alone. Chardonnay has a low price point so you can buy plenty of it to drink with your crew or with your new boo. Kendall Jackson has a delicious chardonnay for about $13.
