I was skeptical about online dating before, but the hit television show Catfish on Mtv has me even more worried. The show is about people that have online relationships and when they finally meet in person, one of the people- if not both of them- have completely lied about who they were.
Now I am weary of men who inbox me on facebook or try to date me with nothing but my picture to go off. It’s hard for me to take these people seriously, but are there people that have been successful with online love?
I used to feel that you had to be pretty desperate to go on a dating site to find a man but it worked for actress Essence Atkins.
Here is this gorgeous, actress and she had trouble finding a man? She stated in an interview that she didn’t have any more time to waste if she wanted children, and she was sick of dating these men and then nothing happened. She went on to say that she didn’t want to be limited to dating guys in the entertainment industry and this gave her the chance to meet a different kind of guy. Enters Jamie Mendez. She replied:
“I put myself in the frame of mind where I wasn’t going to waste any more time. I met my husband at 36, a lot of people have questioned it like, ‘she’s so desperate’ I didn’t want to waste any more time. After 35, I felt like I’d been in these relationships, some were great, some weren’t so great, but they weren’t right partnerships. So I did this inventory, I’m not going to just settle for anyone, and at this point I don’t have any more time to waste if I wanted to have children
She married Jamie Mendez in 2009 after meeting him on the popular dating site, match.com; and last Christmas, the pair welcomed their first child, a baby boy named Varro Blair Mendez.
I feel that her story makes for a great fairy-tale ending and gives some of us single people hope. However, there is no question that when looking for love online we need to be extremely careful. If you choose to venture into the dating world of the internet, do so gallantly. Be sure you take all safety precautions prior to meeting someone for the first time. Meet in public places, drive yourself, and let someone know where you’re going and who you’re meeting. Remember, people can be anything they want to be on social sites and what they claim to be isn’t always the truth..
