She’s Baaack! Janet Jackson Working on New Music, Talks ‘Janet’ 20th Anniversary & Kendrick Lamar

Between doing movies (Why  Did I Get Married 1 and 2, For Colored Girls) and living out of  the country with billionaire husband Wissam Al Mana, it was thought that Janet  Jackson was pulling out of the music industry in recent years. Now on the 20  year anniversary of her fifth album janet, the famous Jackson dishes with Billboard about the album that sexually liberated her,  Kendrick Lamar’s “Poetic Justice,” and new music.

“I can’t believe it is already 20 years! I always write my music based on  what is going on in my life at the time. I wanted to allow people in… I want  my fans to really know me,” she said of the album janet. which dropped on May  18, 1993 and pushed sexual boundaries for the singer.

Jackson also tells Billboard that she’s slowly getting back into the groove,  working on a music project since her last album, 2008’s Discipline. “I  am working on a new project now. We are creating the concept and initial  thoughts on the music. I am excited about the direction we are taking. I don’t  want to rush it… I don’t want to put a time constraint on the creative process,”  she says. Since she puts her life into her music at any given time, maybe fans  will hear some love-themed songs based on her marriage to Al Mana?

Only time will tell. But how does Janet feel about Kendrick Lamar’s hit  “Poetic Justice,” which uses “Any Time, Any Place” from her 1993 LP janet.? “I  love Kendrick’s ‘Poetic Justice,’ she said. “There are artists, true performers  that have come before me who have been a big inspiration to me. I hope I do the  same for others.,” she said about the appreciation new artists have of her music  from sampling.

The music world welcomes you back, Janet!
